Endo:velopment
development within
[exhibit]
Brief:
SnRM, the tin room for para-architecture, invites architects, students and others to participate in a recurring exhibition at our Jersey City–based studio.
Development has become a systematized process which envisions an urban future comprised solely of luxury residential high-rises.
This vision is not unanimous– and the Endo:velopment exhibition is calling on creative minds to show the public, developers and municipal government that there are alternatives which would benefit our existing diverse communities.
Endo:velopment is a play on ‘endo’ (meaning ‘within’) and ‘development’. It describes an approach to urban development which arises from within a neighborhood. By focusing on the potential of self-empowerment, we create direct opposition to the current paradigm- which treats development as a process that is dependent on the influx of an external unaffiliated population.
Architects, students, collaborative groups, and other interested individuals are invited to contribute work that articulates this kind of alternative.
Guidelines:
Works produced for this exhibit are encouraged to take the form of an architectural design. Other creative expressions are welcome and will be considered if they convey clear and site specific alternatives to mainstream urban development.
All works should conform to the following criteria:
> Projects should work with real sites which are already slated for 'development', and those sites should be local/familiar to the project’s creator(s). Sites that have broken ground are acceptable, but avoid sites in which the superstructure shows. Sites where developers plan to demolish a structure that still exist, are also acceptable, as long as they are the site is slated for ‘development’.
> Projects should; demonstrably enhance specific characteristics of the site or neighborhood, provide new opportunities for the current population, or otherwise positively impact the existing community.
> Projects should represent sincere and plausible alternatives, imaginative but not imaginary.
Schedule:
aug 28, sun > Submission Deadline
sep 4, sun > Opening Reception, hours TBD
> Additional Showings, dates TBD
Submissions:
Deadline: Sunday, August 28 11:p
Format:
Project formatting is open-ended. 2D submissions, both printed and digital, should not exceed 3’x2’. Works in other formats (3D, audio, writing, performance etc.) should be discussed with SnRM during development or prior to submission in order to ensure that this exhibit and venue can accommodate the project.
Conventional architectural designs are not expected to be fully detailed. While just a few renderings and a diagram or two may be enough to express the work's intent, even a single high quality rendering might suffice, depending on the project.
In order to submit a project we request that participants fill out this submission form, which enables us to receive digital submissions and also gives notice of mailed submissions.
Mailed submissions cannot be guaranteed inclusion if they are not received by the appropriate deadlines. These materials can be returned to the work’s owner at their behest, after the exhibit is completed if appropriate return packaging is provided.
